This is an introductory article explaining how Projects are used on the Sova platform to create assessment experiences for candidates. Throughout this article you will find links to more in-depth guides on the mentioned features.
What is a Project?
A project contains an assessment experience for one or more participants.
There are 2 types of Projects on the Sova platform:
-
Participant Journey Projects (recommended): Here you can add Assessments and Exercises, as well as information for the candidates (incl. videos). You can also brand the experience with your background image and colours.

-
Assessment-only Projects: In these Projects, you can only add Assessments (more on Assessments v Exercises below)

You can read more about both types of Projects here: Project types: participant journey or assessment(s) only. There you also find guides on how to set up these types of Projects.
What are Phases?
You can structure your Project to have Phases. All Assessments and Exercises are assigned to a Phase and participants can only access the activities of the Phase they are in. Once they have completed a Phase, you can review their results and decide whether they should progress to the next Phase.
Example: Your Project has a first Phase with Assessments. After candidates finish you can review their results and decide who will be invited to the second Phase that includes an Assessment Centre.
Candidates can also be moved to the next Phase automatically - see more below (Scoring & Automation)
What are Assessments and Exercises?
Assessments and Exercises are both activities that allow you to assess candidates. As a rule of thumb, Assessments are scored 'automatically' by the system; whereas Exercises require an assessor to review the candidates' answers and score them.
Examples of Assessments:
- Cognitive Assessments, such as Verbal Skill, Numerical Skill, Logical Skill Assessments or Situational Judgement Assessments
- Personality Questionnaires and Motivation Questionnaires
Examples of Exercises
-
Video Interviews: Video Interviews prompt the candidates to record video answers to interview questions. Your team can then review the video answers later and score them.
- Note: There is an add-on to have video interviews scored via an custom algorithm rather than by assessors - this needs to be set up by our Sova experts individually.
- Assessment Centres - see below: Assessment Centres
What are Assessment Centres (VAC/DAC)?
Note: Assessment Centres can only be added to participant-journey Project types.
Assessment Centres are also called Virtual Assessment Centres or Digital Assessment Centres (VAC/DAC).
Assessment Centres allow you to observe your candidates in real-time as they participate in a range of tasks to assess their suitability and role fit. You can add several Exercise types to an Assessment Centre, for example, two-way live interviews, role plays, group exercises and case studies.
Assessment Centres can be done virtually, including via integration with your organisation's Microsoft Teams account.
You can schedule candidates and assessors via the Sova platform. You can also use self-scheduling which allows candidates to select a time slot which works for them.
You can read more about DAC scheduling and self-scheduling here: How to create DAC templates and schedule DAC sessions
What are hotspots?
Note: Hotspots are only relevant for Participant Journey Project types (see above).
Hotspots are the 'tiles' that the candidate can access.
There are different types of hotspots:
- Information hotspots: These allow you to add text and/or a file for candidates to see and download
- Video hotspots: These allow you to show a video to participants
- Assessment hotspots: These allow candidates to access an Assessment
- Exercise hotspots: These allow candidates to access an Exercise
- Virtual Break Rooms hotspots: This is relevant for Assessment Centres (see above)
- Session Selector hotspots: This is relevant for Assessment Centres (see above)
You can read more about these hotspots and how to add them here: Project Builder: Participant journey projects
You can set up dependencies so that candidates can only see or access hotspots after they have completed certain hotspot(s) or have been invited to a specific Phase (more about Phases above).
What is Scoring and Automation?
The Scoring and Automation feature allows you to set up overall phase scores for candidates and set up automation.
Automation allows you to assign phase statuses to candidates (such as 'pass' or 'fail') and move 'pass' candidates to the next phase of your assessment process.
You can read more about Scoring & Automation and how to set it up here.
